Burro Banton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burro Banton (* 27. December 1956 in Kingston as Donovan Spalding ) is a Jamaican dancehall - reggae singer who especially in the 1980s and 1990s aggressive for his style and his deep, gravelly voice was known. His best known song is "Boom wah dis" on the Street Sweeper - Riddim . He influenced many current dancehall singers like Buju Banton , Bounty Killer and Elephant Man .

Career

Burro Banton grew up in Kingston, Jamaica. There he belonged to the dancehall scene and visited the hip clubs in Jamaica. He mimicked the gestures of DJs and singers and danced to reggae and dancehall. In 1976 his friends convinced him to embark on a career as a DJ . In the late 70s Banton began to sing, since 1978 with the Black-Hoover - sound system , later with Roots Unlimited , Gemini , Volcano and Killamanjaro . At Killamanjaro, he also worked for the first time with Supercat and Nicodemus . In particular with Joey Wales from Roots Unlimited, he delivered DJ battles .

Banton became famous for his deep voice, which makes his numbers stand out from the other tracks recorded on the same riddim . The voice was reminiscent of Prince Jazzbo . He describes himself as an "Original Veteran (Deejay)". He was the first DJ to use the name Banton , a patois word that means "full of lyrics," which is an honor for good lyricists in the Jamaican dancehall scene. His first name Buro was simply a nickname he'd received in his youth.

Banton became known in the mid-1980s in the digital dancehall environment of King Jammy . It was produced by Henry "Junjo" Lawes . He sang on riddims that were recorded with real instruments, but digitally reworked. Until the mid-1980s, his art only took place on the recordings of the DJ tapes, while artists from the same sound system such as Barrington Levy , Yellowman and Eek a Mouse already had successful albums. He released his first LP Buro in 1983, but this was lost in the Yellowman hype.

In the early 1990s, Supercat founded the Wild Apache label , where Banton released his first hit, Boom wah dis , which became his signature track. His second hit was Washington Session. When Supercat went to Columbia Records in 1992 , Banton moved to the Massive B label , where his second album The Original Banton was released. In the same year he had an appearance on Shinehead's song Jamaican in New York.

In 1998, Steely and Cleevie , a well-known producer duo in Jamaica, suggested that he re-record "Boom wah dis" on Steelie and Clevie's current riddim, the Street Sweeper. Banton agreed.

Since 2000, he has in Massive B the title Politicians , which is about the life in the ghettos of Kingston goes Phenomenon 2 , a Ganja -tune, and Jah Jah Rules published. This was followed by Heavenless Riddim ( In da Ghetto ) on Massive B from 2004 and the 2005 reissue of Truth & Rights (originally on Studio One ), where he was represented in a duet with Johnny Osbourne .

Banton tours Europe, Asia and North America regularly. He was on stage with Capleton and Bounty Killer , among others . In 2006 he could also be seen in Germany, Italy and Austria.

meaning

Both Mega Banton , who was considered his successor, and Buju Banton named themselves after Burro Banton and described him as a great influence. Buju Banton sneaked into the clubs at the age of twelve to listen to Burru Banton's DJing and his lyrics.

Private life

He describes himself as a Rastafarian , although he does not see the religion as pragmatic: he does not wear dreadlocks and drinks alcohol, "albeit in moderation" ("I drink a guinness or two, but not more").
