Bury is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county Greater Manchester in England . The administrative center is the city of the same name, Bury , in which around a third of the population lives. Other significant locations in the borough are Prestwich , Radcliffe , Ramsbottom , Tottington and Whitefield . Sister cities are Datong (China), Angoulême and Tulle (France), Schorndorf (Germany) and Woodbury (United States).
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough Bury, the Boroughs Prestwich and Radcliffe and the Urban Districts Tottington and Whitefield were merged. These administrative units previously belonged to the county of Lancashire .
In 1986, Bury became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the higher-level administration of Greater Manchester. Bury remained part of Greater Manchester for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police, fire brigade and public transport.
