Buttermaker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buttermaker (real name: Michael Nieweg , also called: Buttermann or Buttermacher , born  November 30, 1968 ) is a German musician and comedian from Steinhagen in the Gütersloh district , who was particularly known in East Westphalia-Lippe and the Sauerland in the 1990s . Musically, it is all about catchy German-language songs in the style of the 1950s and 1960s. The visual trademarks are a baseball cap and lumberjack shirt. The name refers to the character Morris Buttermaker in the American television series The Bears Are Going .

history

Buttermaker became known regionally in the early 1990s through his band Geistreich . The trio only released a demo tape and broke up after a few months. Buttermaker then performed his first appearances solo with guitar and drum computer, which further increased his regional cult status and led to the first articles and live interviews on local radio stations.

A management company noticed him, and in 1995 his first maxi CD was released, with the support of professional musicians such as Tex Morton ( Lolitas ) and Martin Meinschäfer ( Dolls United ). The four songs are produced in the style of modern rock hits and are about everyday heroes ( caretaker Hans ) or past loved ones ( Nicole ).

Almost all the songs had already appeared on the first Geistreich demo and were in stark contrast to Buttermaker's live concerts, which were consistently spartan and were musically deliberately minimalist and unprofessional. With his very naive and stupid manner Buttermaker made it into numerous television programs , for example Stefan Raab's Vivasion , the NDR late show with Götz Alsmann or the daily RTL talk show with Bärbel Schäfer . For weeks Buttermaker was represented in the charts of Radio Bielefeld , and his CD was discussed on the regional website of Bild . British cult DJ John Peel played the song Saturday on January 28, 1996 on BFBS . At that time there was even its own fanzine ( Beat Emma ), which dealt exclusively with the buttermaker phenomenon.

After the release of his first longplay CD Schick und sportlich in 1996, a large record company became interested in Buttermaker, which a year later released its only major release, Sexy wie Elvis . Again, numerous guest musicians are represented, for example Christof Stein-Schneider ( Fury in the Slaughterhouse ) and several members of the band Sturmschäden .

In 2001 Buttermaker won the RTL II weight loss show Big Diet . After a legal battle with his management at the time, he has largely disappeared from the public eye. The beginning of his musician career is dated to the year 2001 on his homepage. The entire prehistory is not mentioned. The reasons for this are unclear. Outfit, name and musical style have not changed.

controversy

In analogy to the Bielefeld Conspiracy, it was discussed at the beginning of his career whether Buttermaker even existed as a person or whether he is merely the product of skillful management and is portrayed by an actor during performances and interviews. There is no evidence for this thesis.
