C. Fred Bergsten (2002)

Carl Fred Bergsten (born April 23, 1941 in Brooklyn ) is an American economist and political advisor.

Life

Carl Fred Bergsten began his economics studies at Central Methodist University in Fayette , Missouri and continued after graduation at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy , where he received his doctorate. From 1969 to 1971 he went to the National Security Council as Henry Kissinger's assistant for international economic relations . He was then a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank until 1976 . In the Carter administration he worked as Assistant Secretary for International Affairs in the Treasury Department from 1977 to 1981 and then as Undersecretary for Monetary Policy from 1980 to 1981. In this capacity, he attended the G5 Finance Ministers' Meetings and was responsible for preparing the G7 - Summit responsible.

In 1981 he founded the Think Tank Institute for International Economics and chaired it until 2012; the institute changed its name in 2006 after its most important sponsor Peter George Peterson in "Peterson Institute for International Economics".

Bergsten was and is a member of a large number of national and international advisory bodies on economic and currency issues. Bergsten considers the creation of the European monetary union to be a good European policy. In 2009 he was hired as a political advisor to the South Korean President .

Bergsten writes for economic and political magazines and appears in TV magazine programs. He has published a variety of essays and over 40 books.

In addition to US awards, he was accepted into the French Legion of Honor in 1985 and in 1997 as an honorary fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences . In 2013 he received the North Star Order of Sweden.
