Cacine is a town in southwest Guinea-Bissau with 977 inhabitants (as of 2009). It is the seat of the sector of the same name with an area of 613 km² and 15,648 inhabitants (as of 2009), mainly Balanta with some significant minorities from Nalu , Fulbe , Tanda, Djacanca and Sousso.

Cacine is the southernmost sector of Guinea-Bissau.

The river Rio Cacine that runs here is the namesake of the city.

history

In the Portuguese colonial war , which lasted from 1963 to 1974 in Guinea-Bissau and was waged particularly intensively, the area of today's Cacine sector was the scene of mutual commandos and sieges several times . The reason was the border location with the southern neighbor Guinea-Conakry , from where the Guinea-Bissau independence movement PAIGC organized a large part of its actions and its supplies.

structure

The main town of Cacine is divided into two quarters ( Bairros ), the district of Bairro 1 has 467 and Bairro 2 540 inhabitants.

The Cacine sector comprises a total of 99 localities, mostly rural villages ( Tabancas ). Curiously, one bears the name of Berlin ( Portuguese : Berlim ) and has 164 inhabitants, another is the name of Iraq (Portuguese: Iraque ) with 95 inhabitants.

The most important localities in the sector include (as of 2009):

  • Cameconda (580 inhabitants)
  • Canefaque (666 inhabitants)
  • Cassabetche (378 inhabitants)
  • Cassaca (434 inhabitants)
  • Cassumba (373 inhabitants)
  • Dari-Linda (750 inhabitants)
  • Gadamael Porto (477 inhabitants)
  • Sanconha (960 inhabitants)

Economy and sights

Agriculture determines the economy in the cacine sector, especially rice, mangoes, cassava and oil palms, but mostly only in subsistence farming . Fishing in the surrounding rivers should also be mentioned.

The National Park Parque Nacional de Florestas the Cantanhez is a part of the sector Cacine. The geographical remoteness of the region and the poor road connection to the rest of the country ensure that nature is largely intact. The jungle of Cantanhez with its lush flora and fauna with numerous mammals, amphibians and birds can therefore develop largely unaffected in the 1,057 km² area. In the nature park, which the WWF counts among the 12 most important WWF ecoregions on earth, trained park rangers and guides lead visitors along various routes through the area.
