Cahangir Şirgəşt oğlu Cahangirov ( Russian Джахангир Ширгяшт оглы Джахангиров even Jahangir Jahangirov * 20th June 1921 in Balaxanı, Baku ; † 25. March 1992 in Baku, Azerbaijan ) was an Azerbaijani composer, choir director and music teacher.

Life

Cahangir Cahangirov received his first musical training at the Baku Music School. He later graduated from the Baku Theater Technology School. In 1941 he joined the department for folk music of the Azərbaycan Dövlət Conservatoriyası [Azerbaijani State Conservatory], today's Hacıbəyov Music Academy Baku , and learned its basics from Üzeyir Hacıbəyov . As early as 1944 he led the choir of the Azerbaijani State Ensemble for Music and Dance. He continued his studies at the Faculty of Composition with Boris Isaakowitsch Seidman (1908–1981) and graduated in 1951. In 1949 the vocal-symphonic poem Arazın o tayında first received attention in the music scene. For this he received the State Prize of the USSR in 1950 . The work was performed in the Moscow Hypostyle Hall of the House of Trade Unions and in Leningrad in 1950 . From 1949 he also directed the Azerbaijani State Television and Radio Choir for fifteen years. From 1954 he headed the department for choral conducting at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory. In 1962 he wrote the oratorio Sabir for choir and symphony orchestra for the hundredth birthday of the Azerbaijani poet and philosopher Mirzə Ələkbər Sabir (1862–1911) . He was a member of the Azerbaijan Composers Association, board member and head of the choral music department. He was the artistic director of the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic, the Azerbaijani State Television and Radio Choir and the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic. In 1959 he received the honorary title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijani SSR . The honorary title of People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR followed in 1963. After his death in 1992, he was given an honorary grave on the Fəxri Xiyabanda in Baku.

Works (selection)

Cahangirov wrote the operas Azad [Free] and Xanəndənin taleyi [The Singer's Fate], the operetta Təzə gəlin [The New Bride], the cantatas Füzuli , Nəsimi and Aşıq Alı as well as the oratorio Sabir. In the instrumental field he wrote the violin concerto, a concerto for the string instrument tar and orchestra and various suites. There were also songs, romances and film music. Choral music also played a major role in his work. He created choral literature for the Azerbaijani State Ensemble for Singing and Dance.

The opera Xanəndənin taleyi thematizes the life of the Azerbaijani singer and oil millionaire Seyid Mirbabayev (1867–1953). The opera Azad is based on the literary model of the same name by the Azerbaijani poet and dramaturge Mirzə İbrahimov (1911–1993) from 1949. The text book comes from the librettist and director Kərim Kərimov, who also directed the 1957 opera premiere.
