Tofiq Quliyev

Tofiq Ələkbər oğlu Quliyev ( Russian Тофик Алекпер оглы Кулиев ; born November 7, 1917 in Baku ; October 4, 2000 in Baku, Azerbaijan ) was an Azerbaijani pianist, composer, music teacher and music official.

Tofiq Quliyev and his siblings received a musical education from childhood. He was taught the piano and began a preparatory course for the Baku Conservatory in 1929 at the age of 12. In 1934 he was admitted to the conservatory, which he graduated from in 1936. He was taught music theory and composition by Asaf Zeynalli . This recommended him to set poems Mirzə Ələkbər Sabir (1862-1911) and so the song Ushaq ve buz [Child and Ice] was created. In 1935, while still a student, he began to conduct at the Azərbaycan Dövlət Dram Teatrında [Azerbaijani State Drama Theater] in Baku. In 1936 , like other Azerbaijani musicians such as Qara Qarayev and Knyaz Hacıb aufyov, on the recommendation of Üzeyir Hacıbəyov, he was sent to the Moscow Conservatory at the Üzeyir Hacıbəyovs To continue training. Here he was accepted into the piano class of Heinrich Neuhaus , who at the time also included Swjatoslaw Richter and Emil Gilels . At the beginning of his stay in Moscow he was given a scholarship, which was soon canceled, so he was able to make a living with his skills as a pianist. He performed in an orchestra in the Hotel National, where he was discovered by Alexander Naumowitsch Zfasman . This engaged him for his jazz orchestra. With this experience, after his return to Baku in 1939, he founded the first Azerbaijani jazz orchestra together with Knyaz Hacıbəyov and became its first artistic director. The first concert took place in the summer of 1941 in the summer hall of the Philharmonic. After the Soviet Union entered World War II, the orchestra was incorporated into the Red Army and used to look after troops at the front and in military hospitals. Quliyev worked with trumpeter Eddie Rosner , director of the Soviet State Jazz Orchestra, and wrote arrangements for him. After the war worked for various theaters and began to write film music. He also appeared as a conductor at this time. In 1948 he returned to Moscow to continue his studies at the Conservatory. In 1951 he began postgraduate studies there. At that time he was already a well-known composer and pianist. In 1954 he started teaching at the Azerbaijani State Conservatory in Baku. In 1958 he became artistic director of the Azerbaijan Philharmonic Society. He was active in leading positions in the Azərbaycan Bəstəkarlar İttifaqı (Association of Azerbaijani Composers) for over thirty years and from 1990 chaired the association. In 1958 he received the honorary title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR and in 1964 the honorary title of People's Artist of the Azerbaijani SSR . He was the recipient of the State Prize of the Azerbaijani SSR. He was a holder of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Badge of Honor of the Soviet Union , and an honorary doctorate from Khazar University . On November 7, 1997 he was awarded the İstiqlal Order .

Works (selection)

Tofiq Quliyev wrote over fifty popular songs. He worked with well-known poets such as Səməd Vurğun and Rəsul Rza (1910–1981). Well-known Azerbaijani singers such as Rashid Behbudov and Şövkət Ələkbərova (1922–1993) interpreted them beyond the borders of Azerbaijan. At the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow in 1957, the song Sene de qalmaz was performed by Rashid Behbudov, making it very popular in the Soviet Union at the time. He also wrote the music for over twenty films, four operettas and piano music.
