Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Cala Bóta ('barrel bay') is a small bay on the east coast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the southeast of the municipality of Manacor between the towns of Cales de Mallorca and S'Estany d'en Mas .

Location and description

Cala Bóta beach

The Cala Bóta is a rocky sea inlet about 200 meters long and 50 to 200 meters wide on the cliffs of Manacor, about 11.5 kilometers southeast of the main town of the municipality. The north-west oriented bay is bounded in the east by the Punta de s'Escull and in the south-west by the Penyes Altes de s'Hospitalet . The immediate hinterland of Cala Bóta , the Marina de s'Hospitalet , is undeveloped. It is part of the 6.27 km² large natural area of special value (Àrea natural d'especial interès - ANAI) of the Cales Verges de Manacor , according to the Natural Area Act (ANAI / ARIP) to protect the soil from construction.

The bay forms the mouth of the Regueró de Cala Bóta , a torrent that only carries water after heavy rainfall. It rises about 300 meters southeast of the ruins of the prehistoric village of S'Hospitalet Vell . In front of the confluence with the Cala Bóta , a brackish pond can hold up for a long time after rainfall . To the north above the pond, 50 meters from the sea shore of the bay, there is an artificial cave that could have served as a burial site in prehistoric times.

The 30 meter long beach of Cala Bóta is up to 18 meters wide and framed by rocks on both sides. While the east side is only overgrown with low bushes, there are some pines on the rocky slopes in the north and west . The beach is made up of pebbles , interspersed with small and large stones. Here can seaweed deposits form, lie the dried a long time. There is a small grotto above the sea of the eastern cliff, about 70 meters from the beach . On the opposite west side there are some rock breaks on the bank of the cliff and a cliff that makes it difficult for boats to enter the bay.

The Cala Bóta is little visited, from time to time by locals from the somewhat distant than a kilometer Cales de Mallorca. Also divers are sometimes encountered. An original plan from 1962 to include Cala Bóta and other northeastern bays in the settlement area of Cales de Mallorca was not realized. Only one access road was partially completed, the now unpaved access road to the bay.

Access

From the MA-4014 road between Porto Cristo and Portocolom , the road to Cales de Mallorca branches off to the southeast about 10 kilometers after Porto Cristo (at kilometer stone 6). From this, after a little over two kilometers, at the underpass of the Regueró de Cala Bóta stream , a wide, unpaved path leads off to the left, which ends behind a passage to the right of a large gate on a curved path through the nature reserve running northeast at Cala Magraner . From here, further paths branch off one after the other in an easterly direction to the bays of Cala Bóta , Cala Virgili and Cala Pilota . The distance from the gate to Cala Bóta is about 1.5 kilometers. There is also a narrow path along the coast from Cales de Mallorca to the northeast to Cala Bóta .
