Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Cala Morlanda is a small bay and a settlement named after it (Urbanització) in the east of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the north-eastern part of the municipality of Manacor .

Cala Morlanda bay

Punta de sa Roca

The bay of Cala Morlanda is a rocky sea inlet south of the tourist resort S'Illot between the northeastern Cape Punta de sa Roca and Cape Punta Rasa in the southwest. It extends about 300 meters inland, with a width of also about 300 meters. While the Cala Morlanda settlement adjoins the area to the north, the hinterland to the west and south of the bay, the area of sa Gruta , is hardly built on. In the southwestern area, Cala Morlanda has a smaller side bay with the Caló d'en Rafalino .

On the north shore of Cala Morlanda , shielded from the open sea by the eastern Punta de sa Roca , is the bathing area of the Cala Morlanda settlement, which stretches in a semicircle around this area of the bay. Since the settlement is elevated on the cliff coast framing the bay , several stairs lead down to sea level. The approximately 30-meter-long walkable shore area of the bathing area is characterized by rocks and stones, from the shore line sandy soil extends into the sea. The rocks of the shore area of Cala Morlanda are strongly structured by the influence of the sea surf.

Cala Morlanda settlement

Talaiot of Cala Morlanda
Bathing area of the settlement

The east coast of Mallorca at Cala Morlanda was settled in prehistoric times. The remains of a talaiot, a Bronze Age tower of the Talaiot culture named after these towers, bear witness to this . You are right on the coast, north of Punta de sa Roca . Other remnants of such a talaiot near the town are in the area of sa Gruta on the road to Porto Cristo . Due to the proximity of both talaiots to S'Illot on Cala Moreia , a connection to the talaiotic settlement of S'Illot is assumed.

Small chapel

The settlement or urbanization ( Catalan Urbanització ) of Cala Morlanda was founded in 1887 by priests from Manacor. On the northwest side of the bay, between the mostly one- or two-story houses of the village, there is still a small chapel from the time it was founded. Today the settlement has practically merged with the southern part of S'Illot, which is adjacent to the municipality of Manacor, and is statistically recorded together with it as S'Illot - Cala Morlanda. Both had a population of 1758 in 2007.

In Cala Morlanda there are no buildings like those lining the beach of S'Illot. The houses in the " finca style" stand on a chessboard-like network of streets. The streets are covered with tamarisk and pine trees. There are hardly any utilities or restaurants, these are found in sufficient numbers in the neighboring S'Illot to the north. The settlement extends to the east to the rocky coast to the open sea. The only bathing area is the one in the south of the settlement on the bay of the same name.

Access

From the main road MA-4023 between Cala Millor and Porto Cristo, the road Camí de Cala Morlanda branches off at kilometer 2.8 in the east towards the sea to Cala Morlanda and the neighboring settlement to the north. Furthermore, several residential roads lead from the neighboring town of S'Illot south towards Cala Morlanda.
