Calcium silicate is a chemical compound from the group of calcium compounds and silicates .

Occurrence

Calcium silicate occurs naturally in the form of the mineral wollastonite .

Extraction and presentation

Calcium silicate can be obtained by reacting calcium oxide (CaO, quicklime) with silicon dioxide (SiO 2 , quartz or silica gel ):

properties

Calcium silicate is a white, odorless solid that is practically insoluble in water.

use

Calcium silicate board for structural fire protection

Calcium silicate is used in food technology as a release agent or as a carrier substance (for dyes and emulsifiers). It is approved in the EU as a food additive with the number E 552 with maximum quantity restrictions of 10 grams per kilogram for certain foods, for seasonings and food supplements also without maximum quantity restriction ( quantum satis ).

The mineral wollastonite is widely used in the ceramic industry and as a filler for polymers.

Calcium silicate boards are used in the building industry for structural fire protection and as internal insulation for walls and ceilings.
