The California Guitar Trio or CGT for short is an instrumental music band consisting of three guitarists that was founded in 1991.

Band history

Paul Richards from Salt Lake City , Bert Lams from Brussels and Hideyo Moriya from Tokyo met in England in 1987 at a guitar craft course directed by Robert Fripp . After completing several of these accredited courses, they went on a world tour with Fripps League of Crafty Guitarists until its dissolution. With the desire for further cooperation, the three settled in Los Angeles and founded the California Guitar Trio in 1991, with which they created a mix of their own compositions, surf music covers and classical arrangements .

Their influences cover a spectrum from the fields of classical, rock , blues , jazz , world music , bluegrass and, as an essential Californian music style, surf music. The performances, considered virtuoso and presented with a pinch of humor, are aimed primarily at an audience from progressive rock , acoustic music and classical music.

Music from the CGT was used as background music for reporting on the Olympic Games of 1998 and 2000 on the American channels CBS , NBC , CNN WorldBeat and ESPN TV . On Tony Levin's CD Pieces of the Sun , the CGT recorded the title Apollo , which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003 . Music from the CGT was broadcast as a wake-up call to the crew of the NASA space shuttle Endeavor .

The names the California Guitar Trio took on stage include King Crimson , John McLaughlin , David Sylvian , Tito Puente , Leftover Salmon , Taj Mahal , Steve Lukather , Simon Phillips , Adrian Legg , Tony Levin , Jon Anderson , Rick Wakeman and others.

Twelve CDs have been released since the company was founded: seven studio albums with original compositions and classical adaptations such as the Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 and the beginning of Beethoven's 5th Symphony , four live albums and a Christmas album with well-known and less well-known Christmas music.
