Verrucosa Callitris is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to southeastern Australia.

description

Callitris verrucosa grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach heights of up to 8 meters. Usually several tribes are formed. The branches go up straight from the trunk.

The green to gray-green leaves are 2 to 4 millimeters long. Their back is rounded.

The male cones are in groups on the branches and are cylindrical in shape with a length of up to 5 millimeters. The egg-shaped to spherical female cones stand individually or in groups, have a stem and are 2 to 2.5 centimeters thick. Each cone consists of six thick, finely warty cone scales and carries numerous seeds. After ripening, they remain on the branches for several years before they release the seeds and fall. The dark brown seeds are about 4 millimeters in size and have two or three wings.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Callitris verrucosa is in western New South Wales , northwestern Victoria , southern Queensland and southeastern South Australia . It extends there from Nymagee in the east to Darling Downs in the north and over Swan Hill to the northern Nullarbor Desert in the west. To the west of the Eyre Peninsula , however, it only occurs sporadically.

Callitris verrucosa grows mainly on hills with red desert sand.

Callitris verrucosa is classified as "not endangered" in the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary.

Systematics

The first description as Frenela verrucosa was in 1825 by Allan Cunningham in Mémoires du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle , Volume 13, page 74. Ferdinand von Mueller transferred the species in 1882 in Systematic Census of Australian Plants ... , page 109 as Callitris verrucosa in the genus Callitris . Synonyms for Callitris verrucosa (A. Cunn. Ex Mirb.) F. Muell. are Callitris preissii subsp. verrucosa (A. Cunn. ex Mirb.) F. Muell. and Callitris preissii var. verrucosa (A. Cunn. ex Mirb.) J. Silba .

The species forms natural hybrids with Callitris glaucophylla .
