Macroscopic features

Caloplaca cerina is a crusty lichen, that is, its bed ( thallus ) lies close to the base. The thallus is thin, slightly warty, gray without soredia and isidia . The apothecia have a diameter of 0.4 to 1.5 mm. The apothecary disc is yellow to orange, not frosted, mostly flat and somewhat concave in the early stage of development . The edge of the apothecary is light gray.

Microscopic features

The spores are hyaline , polar 2-celled, 10–15 × 4.30–5.90 µm. The paraphyses are not or only slightly thickened at the end.

Spot reaction

The thallus does not change color when it is drizzled with potassium hydroxide solution (K-) and the apothecary disk changes color to red (K +).

Similar Art

Caloplaca cerina var. Muscorum caneasily be confusedwith Caloplaca cerina . The difference is that Caloplaca cerina occurs on bark and Caloplaca cerina var. Muscorum only on moss.
