John Calvin Culver (born November 2, 1943 in East Bloomfield , New York ; died August 10, 1987 in Inverness , Florida ) was an American actor and porn star. Using the pseudonym Casey Donovan , he became the first gay porn film star in the early 1970s .

He chose his pseudonym after the name of his character in his first gay porn film Casey (1971). That same year he starred in Wakefield Poole's Boys in the Sand . This film grossed more than a hundred times its production cost of only $ 8,000, was the first hardcore film to be shown not only in sex cinemas but also in reputable houses, also discussed in established media such as the Village Voice and the New York Times , and already rang the bell one year before Deep Throat the fashion of socially acceptable porn chic set in . In the film, Culver played a young man who had fun with other male vacationers at Fire Island , which is traditionally frequented by many gays . The last of the three sex scenes in particular was controversial, as Culver was shown having sex with the black actor Tommy Moore, which in view of the sensitivities of the time represented a double break in taboos.

The following year he played a man in The Back Row who, after visiting a gay sex cinema, initiates a naughty young man from the country (a kid from Montana , played by George Payne) into the codes of the gay scene in New York. In 1973 he played in Radley Metzger's Sexklamauk Score , one of the first sex films with bisexual content, the role of a young husband who, after initial moral concerns, lets himself be carried away with his wife into love games with another couple. The film is still in circulation in various versions, sometimes as a softcore film , sometimes with hardcore scenes.

In the following years he played in numerous other hardcore productions, including heterosexual ones such as today's classic The Opening of Misty Beethoven , but also had smaller roles in regular feature films such as Victor Nuñez ' Gal Young' Un (1979). In the 1980s he suffered increasing health problems as a result of HIV infection; In 1987 he died of AIDS .
