Campyloneura virgula is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae). Since hardly any males have been found so far, it is assumed that the species reproduces parthenogenetically . The specific epithet virgula ( Latin : virgo = virgin) refers to it. The few males found so far had stunted genitals and were unable to reproduce. However, fertile males are said to occur in North Africa.

features

The bugs are 3.9 to 4.7 millimeters long. They are characteristically colored with yellow and brown spots and in particular have a strong yellow colored cuneus on the hemielytras , which has a dark red tip. Their antennae are very long. The nymphs are yellow and have red and white striped antennae and red stripes on the sides of the pronotum . The species is similar to Cyllecoris histrionius and Tupiocoris rhododendri .

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed from southern Scandinavia over large parts of Europe to North Africa and east over Asia Minor and the Ukraine to the Caucasus. It was introduced to North America by humans. It is widespread in Germany and Austria and not uncommon in many places.

Way of life

The bugs live on various deciduous trees, such as linden ( Tilia ), hazel ( Corylus ), alder ( Alnus ), hawthorn ( Crataegus ), hornbeam ( Carpinus ) and various fruit trees, but especially on common ash ( Fraxinus excelsior ). Both the adult bedbugs and the nymphs feed predominantly on the larvae of leaf fleas of the genus Psyllopsis , aphids , mites and other small invertebrates. They also suck on honeydew . It is anecdotal that Campyloneura virgula, like other soft bugs, stung humans. The overwintering takes place in the egg. The nymphs hatch in May and June, the adult bugs appear from June to September, rarely until mid-October.
