The 1980 Dufferin Cue Canadian Open was a professional, non-ranking snooker tournament for the 1980/81 season . It was held from August 13 to 31, 1980 as part of the Canadian National Exhibition in the Canadian city of Toronto . The winner was local hero Cliff Thorburn , who defeated the Welshman Terry Griffiths 17:10 in the final. It was the last event for the Canadian Open as the tournament got in the way of the earlier start of the season in Great Britain. It wasn't until 1985 that it was revived as the Canadian Masters .
Prize money
For the first time, the tournament was sponsored by the cue manufacturer Dufferin Cue . It was for this reason that the prize pool was increased by more than 300% to £ 9,822 , about a quarter of which went to the winner.

Tournament course
The field of 24 players mostly took part in the first round, with eight professional players not joining until the round of 16. In the first round, eight other professional players and eight English and Canadian amateurs competed, with one professional playing against an amateur. The eight winners each played in the round of 16 against another professional player, from there on the tournament victory was played out. Up to the semi-finals, the games were played in the best of 17 frames mode, before this was increased to a maximum of 33 frames in the final.
Note: Since the number one in the world ranking list Ray Reardon did not take part in the tournament, the counting of the world ranking list positions starts at two. Furthermore, the amateur players are marked with an A instead of the world ranking positions.

final
In the final, Terry Griffiths from Welsh and Cliff Thorburn from Canada met two players who had become world snooker champions in 1979 (Griffiths) and 1980 (Thorburn). The two players faced each other in the final last year, when Thorburn won 17:16 and won his third title at the Canadian Open.
The beginning of the game was shaped by Thorburn, who took the lead 5-0 and 7-1. Griffiths then managed to win a frame before Thorburn restored the old distance and Griffiths was able to win another frame. But now Thorburn took over again, who now won five frames in a row and led with an impossible score of 13: 3. Griffiths shortened to 13: 5 before Thorburn ruined this success and won two frames himself. Now, however, Griffiths took over the helm when he - with the help of a 121 break - shortened to 15:10. Thorburn managed to win the 26th frame before he won the 27th frame with 82: 6 and thus won the match. For Thorburn, the fourth title win should remain the last, in the new edition of the tournament as the Canadian Masters , he managed one more final.
