Canneto is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality of Monteverdi Marittimo in the province of Pisa in Tuscany .

geography

The place is about 3 kilometers northeast of the capital Monteverdi Marittimo, about 60 km southeast of the provincial capital Pisa and about 75 km southwest of the regional capital Florence in the Cecina valley (Val di Cecina) at the transition of the Sterza valley (tributary of the Cecina) to the Val di Cornia . The place is at 295  m slm and had 182 inhabitants in 2001. In 2011 there were 177 inhabitants. The river Cecina runs about 13 km north, the Cornia flows about 6.5 km southwest.

history

The Castello of Canneto was built around the year 1000, probably over an earlier settlement, and was a fief of the Abbey of San Pietro in Palazzuolo. The place was first mentioned in 1084 by the city of Volterra . From 1168 the place was under the later Bishop of Volterra , Ildebrando Pannocchieschi. In 1472 Canneto submitted to the Republic of Florence .

Attractions

  • San Lorenzo , church in the center that belongs to the diocese of Massa Marittima-Piombino . Romanesque building from the 11th or 12th century, contains a bronze crucifix with the inscription La Vergine, San Giovanni, l'Angelo ed il Sepolcro .
  • City walls of the elliptical historic town center (approx. 120 × 45 m). The defensive wall had two fortification gates that are still preserved today:
    • Porta agl'Archi , southern fortification gate .
    • Porta alla Buca , western fortification gate.
