Caparaó , officially Portuguese Município de Caparaó , is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais . It is 351 km from the capital Belo Horizonte and is located in the Serra do Caparaó . It is known for the nearby Caparaó National Park .
The population was estimated on July 1, 2018 at 5424 inhabitants, who are called Caparaoenses (Portuguese caparaoenses ). The approximately 130.7 km² large community area is mountainous and forms a rugged relief. Surrounding places are Alto Caparaó , Alto Jequitibá , Luisburgo , Divino and Espera Feliz . The place can be reached via the federal and regional roads BR-381 , BR-262 and MG-111 .
The community became independent on March 1, 1963 and spun off from the Espera Felix municipality. At that time it was divided into two districts, of which the Distrito de Caparaó Velho was spun off as the new Munizip Alto Caparaó in 1995 and Caparaó lost a significant part of its population and parish area.
