The Caproni Ca.36 was an Italian heavy bomber of the First World War , designed and built by the Italian Giovanni Battista Caproni . Caproni began building giant aircraft in 1913. During World War I, he built a large number of bombers with the military model designation about 1 to about 5 . The Ca.36 was a variant of the Ca.3 type that was used from 1917.
history
The Italian Air Force mainly used the type to bomb targets in Austria-Hungary , but it was also used in France and Libya . The Caproni types were also flown by the French Air Force and the US Army Signal Corps . Britain used the Caproni bombers before the introduction of the Handley Page O / 100 .
After the First World War, the Caproni bombers flew with the Italian Air Force and in the USA until 1929. A total of 153 about 36 were made.
In 1987 the USAF Museum received an approx. 36 loan for restoration from the Italian Museo dell'aeronautica Gianni Caproni in Trento , where it had stood since 1934.
construction
The Caproni Ca.36 had three water-cooled Isotta Fraschini V.4B engines with 150 hp each and flew with a crew of four (two pilots, a front gunner and a rear gunner). It was equipped with two 6.5 mm machine guns to defend itself against hunters. The tail unit was divided into three parts. The aircraft could fly with two engines without any problems. The support surfaces of the approx. 36 could easily be removed, which saved space in the hangar .
