The Caproni Ca.97 was an Italian multipurpose aircraft. It was the first commercial success of the aircraft manufacturer Caproni in the 1930s.
History and construction
The aircraft was designed in 1927 as a shoulder- wing aircraft for up to six passengers and was originally designed for three engines. Lorraine-Dietrich in-line engines with an output of 130 hp, 97 kW were planned. But there were also aircraft with one or two engines with a total output of approx. 400 to 500 HP (298–373 kW) built. The above technical data correspond to the single-engine version.
The 97 was used in the military and civilian sectors as a transporter , a training aircraft , an ambulance aircraft , a reconnaissance aircraft and a bomber . In the reconnaissance version, a machine gun stand was installed behind the wing.
The Bristol radial engine was also used for the Ca.97 Idro variant . This was a seaplane with two floats.
The total number of about 97 built was probably 13 copies.
