The caragana ( Caragana ) are a genus of the subfamily Pea (Faboideae) within the family of legumes (Fabaceae). The genus includes around 80 to 100 species .

Appearance

Caragana species are undemanding, woody plants: deciduous shrubs or rarely small trees . In some species the woody end of the rhachis is transformed into a thorn . They are characterized by paired or finger-shaped pinnate leaves with four to twenty leaflets. The leaflets are entire. The small stipules are awl-shaped or prickly.

The flowers are axillary singly or in pairs to five together in dold-like inflorescences. The bracts are often awl-shaped. The calyx stands at an angle on the peduncle. The five sepals are fused tubular or bell-shaped. The butterfly flowers are white, lemon yellow, orange or reddish to purple in color. The most sedentary ovary contains many ovules . Usually sessile, slender, straw-colored, many-seeded legumes are formed.

The Caragana species are native to Central and East Asia . Some species were introduced to Europe and North America by humans . Most species do best in regions with cold winters and dry and hot summers.

Some species are planted in China as ornamental plants or, for example, to fortify sand dunes.
