The Schlenken sedge ( Carex heleonastes ), also called peat sedge , is a species of the genus Seggen ( Carex ) within the family of the sour grass family (Cyperaceae). It is common in the northern hemisphere .

Description and phenology

The Schlenken sedge is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. It has no runners . It usually forms small, loose clumps . The straight stem is sharp, triangular and very rough below the inflorescence. The leaves are equipped with stomata on both sides, 2 to 2.5 mm wide and gray-green.

The flowering period extends mainly from May to June. The inflorescence, which is usually quite capricious, is up to 2 inches long and contains about four to six spikelets. The spikelets are about 5 to 10 mm long and up to 5 mm wide and brown, the lowest are sometimes a little apart. The tubes are yellow-green and 2.5 to 3 mm long. There are two scars. The fruits ripen quickly, so that by July most of the fruits have already failed.

The species chromosome number is 2n = 56.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the rare Schlenken sedge extends from the Alps to the Alpine foothills , the Carpathians , Bulgaria and the Caucasus ; in Northern Europe, its area extends from the north German plains eastward over the Baltic States and Northern Russia to the Urals ; isolated occurrences exist in western Siberia and it occurs in Iceland . In North America there are occurrences in Canada from Hudson Bay to the Rocky Mountains .

It is rare in the Alpine foothills of Central Europe; occasionally they are found in alpine moors; it forms smaller stocks at its locations. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises in Vorarlberg in Hochtannberg up to 1660 m above sea level.

The Schlenken sedge is an ice age relic . She only finds living conditions that appeal to her in a few protected moor areas. In the Central European lowlands it has largely disappeared due to cultivation measures, although a number of sites were still known there in the last century.

The Schlenken-Sedge thrives best on peat soils that are poor in base or with a moderate base content . It reacts sensitively to increased nitrogen content in the soil. It only thrives in gullies of intermediate moors . It is a character species of the Caricetum heleonastae from the association of the Caricion lasiocarpae.
