history

The brewery building in Champs Fleurs, Trinidad

To reduce Trinidad's dependence on sugar and oil mining, the Caribbean Development Company Limited (CDC) was founded in 1947 at the instigation of Sir Gerald Wight. In September 1950 the first Trinidian beer, Carib Lager, hit the market. The beer is still available today, is sold in much of the Caribbean and is the market leader in Trinidad. In 1955 the CDC became the Carib Brewery Ltd. with initially 7 employees and the Carib Glassworks Ltd split. Through acquisitions, Carib obtained a monopoly on beer production in Trinidad in 1957. In the 1970s, Carib expanded and increased its output to 250,000 hectoliters per year. In 1973, Malta Carib , a malt beer , was the first non-alcoholic drink to be launched. 1985 the first mixed beer drink followed with Shandy Carib . In 1987, the equipment was modernized by the Steinecker machine factory , so that the output mark of 1,000,000 hectoliters per year was exceeded for the first time. In the period that followed, the beverage business was internationalized. On the one hand, distribution and licensing agreements have been concluded for Trinidad and Tobago with foreign beverage producers such as Diageo and InBev . On the other hand, the export of own brands abroad was started. New production sites have also been established for this purpose: the Carib Brewery St. Kitts and Nevis has existed since 1997, and the Carib Brewery Grenada since 2002 . In 2015, Carib Radler , another mixed beer drink, was launched on the market, and in 2018 the Shandy Carib flavor Portugal (a local variant of the tangerine ).
