The Carinthian Tech Research ( CTR ), based in Villach was the largest non-university research center in Carinthia . The focus was on intelligent sensors and system integration . The company was integrated into Silicon Austria Labs GmbH in June 2019 , in which the activities will be continued.

history

Carinthian Tech Research was founded in 1997 as an association and then as a GmbH, as a technical office for electronics and microelectronics as well as contract research and advice in the field of sensor technology . In 1998 it became Austria's first Kplus competence center in the federal research funding program. September 2001 the conversion into a stock corporation took place. In 2003 the company was certified according to ISO 9001/2000. In 2007, CTR became the COMET K1 Competence Center for Advanced Sensor Technologies . In 2009 CTR already had 40 employees; in 2013 the workforce comprised 55 employees and 14 doctoral students. In 2015 the ASSIC Austrian Smart Systems Integration Research Center could also be positioned as a COMET K1 center. In 2015, two clean rooms (class ISO 5, class ISO8) were put into operation, with a focus on structure and connection technology as well as microsystem technology . As a contribution by the federal state of Carinthia to the establishment of an Austria-wide research center on microelectronics, CTR was integrated into Silicon Austria Labs GmbH in 2019.

organization

The shareholders of the stock corporation were the state of Carinthia (via BABEG) as the majority owner (70%), as well as the city of Villach  (10%), the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft  (10%) and the Carinthian Federation of Industry (10%).

Werner Scherf was the managing director until the company was dissolved. Simon Grasser was CFO.

financing

In 2015, CTR generated 7.2 million euros, of which 6.2 million euros were project-related self-financing, plus basic financing from the state of Carinthia and the city of Villach, as well as from BMVIT, BMWFJ and the state of Styria 28 million euros COMET funding from the Research  Promotion Agency (FFG). ASSIC will be funded with 18.4 million euros until 2018.

Cooperations

We have been working closely with the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems  (IMS) in Dresden for many years .

The scientific network includes the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , the Alpen-Adria University of Klagenfurt , the Technical University of Delft , the Johannes Kepler University of Linz , the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne  (EPFL), the Vienna University of Technology and the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences .

The CTR is also networked with the European technology platforms EPoSS and ECSEL.

Activity and fields of work

The research areas of the CTR include:

  • Microsystem Technologies
  • Heterogeneous Integration Technologies
  • Photonic Systems
  • Smart Systems

The technological focus is on the following areas:

In addition to research and development , expertise and feasibility studies in the field of system solutions and technology transfer as well as measurements, laboratory analyzes and simulations are created.

The CTR has now registered over 80 patents. CTR attracted worldwide attention with the development of the world's first miniature laser spark plug for car engines, together with AVL List (2004).

Awards

  • 2003 Winner of the “Phoenix” innovation award
  • 2012 Energy Globe Award - Carinthia (a UN program), for the K-Project IPOT - cooperative photovoltaic research to get more electricity from the sun
  • 2014 PCB Design Award
