Carl Bille
Carl Ludwig Bille (born February 20, 1815 in Copenhagen , † November 14, 1898 in Copenhagen) was one of the most important Danish marine painters , whose work consists primarily of (partly romantic ) pictures of ships, seas, ports and beaches.
Life
Carl Bille went to sea for a long time and began to work as an artist as an autodidact from 1850, which is why his pictures are characterized by great expertise in the details shown. From 1855 he was an apprentice to the marine painter Carl Dahl for a year . In 1868 he received a scholarship to attend the Art Academy in Copenhagen.
Pictures by Carl Bille were represented at numerous exhibitions, including:
- several times between 1854 and 1891 in the Royal Danish Academy of Art at Charlottenborg Palace
- In 1882, 1884 and 1890 at the art exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Bremen
and are now in museums and private collections - inside and outside Denmark.
Carl Bille was the father of the marine painter Vilhelm Bille (1864–1908) and the grandfather of the painters Willy Bille (1889–1944) and Ove Svenson (1880–1976).
