Life

Carl Blümel grew up as the son of high school professors Anton Blümel and Maria Blümel in a Catholic family and passed the Abitur in 1911 at the Luisenstädtischen Gymnasium in Berlin. He then studied classical archeology, philology and art history at the Berlin University . Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff and Georg Loeschcke were among his teachers . He took part in the First World War and was awarded the Hohenzollern House Order as an officer . Only after the end of the Second World War did the trained sculptor turn to classical studies.

1922 Carl Blümel at Ferdinand Noack with the work of the temple of Athena Nike The frieze doctorate and received in 1924 the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). From 1927 he worked in the State Museums in Berlin, where he was appointed curator in 1929 and professor in 1935. In 1947, Carl Blümel finally took over the management of the Berlin Collection of Antiquities , which he held until his retirement in 1961.

As a trained sculptor, his work had a particular influence on his preoccupation with ancient sculpting techniques. This had a particular impact on the debate about the Hermes of Olympia , where he took the view that the figure was of Greek and not Roman origin. He justified this not only with style-critical arguments, but also with the technical traces of processing on the image.

His first work, Greek Sculpture , was published in 1927, and his work, Greek Sculptors at Work , from 1940 , made him known to a wider public.

Carl Blümel is buried in the family grave of the Blümel family in the churchyard of the St. Michael parish on Hermannstrasse in Berlin-Neukölln.
