Carl Bruck

Carl Bruck (born February 28, 1879 in Glatz , Silesia ; † June 12, 1944 in Hamburg ) was a German doctor and dermatologist .

Life

Carl Bruck grew up in Dresden , studied medicine in Munich and received his doctorate there in 1902. He then moved to the Institute for Infectious Diseases in Berlin, headed by Robert Koch , where he researched syphilis . In 1909 he completed his habilitation at the University of Breslau , was appointed professor in 1911 and moved to the Dermatological Clinic of the Altona Hospital in 1914 .

Together with August von Wassermann and Albert Neisser, Carl Bruck developed a serological test for syphilis pathogens, the so-called Wassermann reaction . He was also involved in research into tuberculosis .

As a result of the National Socialist race laws, he was forced to give up his job in 1935. In order to avoid the anti-Semitic persecution and the imminent deportation by the National Socialists to the concentration camp, he and his wife committed suicide.
