Carl Constantin Platen
Carl Constantin Platen (born September 24, 1843 in Stralsund ; † June 29, 1899 in Barth ) was a German doctor and zoological collector of birds and butterflies.
Life
After working as a doctor in Amoy in the Chinese Empire , Carl Constantin Platen worked as a zoological collector of birds and butterflies. Between 1878 and 1894 he undertook extensive trips with his wife Margarete, which took him to South Celebes in 1878 , to Borneo in 1880 , to Borneo, Seram and Ambon in 1881, to Ambon in 1882, to Celebes in 1884/1885, and to the Sulu Islands in 1887 and to Palawan , 1889 to Mindanao and 1892/1894 to Mindoro and Batjan . Most of the harvest collected on these expeditions, which consisted of 728 bellows from 141 bird taxa, was acquired by Platen's friend Wilhelm Blasius for the Natural History Museum in Braunschweig. Another part was sold to Wilhelm Schlueter's Natural Science Institute in Halle (Saale) .
Platen was almost blind and deaf when he returned to Germany in 1894 and settled in Barth in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where he died in 1899.
Dedication names
Several Vogeltaxa lead Platen's name in the epithet, including snoring Rail ( Aramidopsis plateni ), the Plate Dove ( Gallicolumba platenae ) that Zwergbuschtimalie ( Sterrhoptilus plateni ), the Palawan Spatelschwanzpapagei ( Prioniturus platenae ), the Palawan Grundschnäpper ( Ficedula platenae ) and Thapsinillas longirostris platenae (Sangihe subspecies of the Sulu-Bülbüls ). The butterfly taxa named after Carl Constantin Platen include Euploea platenae , Amathuxidia plateni , Amblypodia plateni , Charaxes plateni , Chionaema plateni , Choaspes plateni , Danis plateni , Prothoe plateni and Troides plateni .
