Carl Fischer in Osnabrück (around 1885)

Carl Fischer (born June 6, 1841 in Grünberg in Silesia , † June 22, 1906 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German worker . His memoirs, which Paul Göhre published in two large volumes in Jena and Leipzig , are a cultural document of the time of Germany's economic rise in the second half of the 19th century.

Life

Fischer came from a family of craftsmen based in the Mansfeld region. His father, who learned in Eisleben, became a master baker in Grünberg. Carl Fischer, who suffered from his father's tyranny at an early age, also learned the bakery trade. His waltz took him west.

In 1864 he started as an earthworker on the railway. In 1867 he moved to Hinsbeck and worked there on earthworks for the construction of the Kempen-Kaldenkirchen-Venlo railway line. The migrant workers lived in self-built barracks and had little or no contact with the village population.

From 1869 to 1885 he worked as a steelworker in Osnabrück . He worked there in the main railway workshop for another 15 years. In 1900 he returned to his homeland. He spent the last years of his life with relatives in Jeßnitz (Anhalt) and Wansleben am See .

Fischer wrote down his memoirs at the age of 60 as an invalid . He had never written before. His style was accordingly plain and simple, quite clumsy in places, but he obviously stuck to the truth and wrote relentlessly with open criticism.

He was unmarried all his life and was buried in the southern cemetery in Halle (Saale) .
