Life

Carl Friedrich von Both came from the Mecklenburg primeval noble family Both and was born as the son of the landowner von Both on Weitendorf . He obtained his high school education in Gotha, Thuringia . From 1807 Both studied history and literature at the University of Heidelberg , where he became a member of the Corps Guestphalia . In 1809 he switched to Rostock University and began studying law, which he finished in 1810. In August of the same year he got a job as an auditor in the Schwerin judicial office, where he was promoted to the chancellery in 1812 and to the judiciary in 1814. In 1818 he began working at the regional court in Rostock, where he became deputy director in 1820. In the same year, von Both became First Government Plenipotentiary for the University of Rostock on behalf of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I. In this function he was directly subordinate to him. His job was to reorganize the university's finances. In 1827 he prepared the negotiations between the Grand Duke and the city of Rostock in order to have the city's compatronage abolished and thus to transfer the university to sole sovereign sovereignty. Here he had great success. With Both's curatorship and decisive participation, several important institutions were newly founded, such as the chemical laboratory in 1834.

In December 1836, the Grand Duke appointed him vice-chancellor of the university. He continued to work for the expansion of the university, so the Institute for Physiology and Comparative Anatomy was opened in 1838. Von Both also played a decisive role in the approval of the “New Museum”, which was granted in 1840, today an extension of the main university building.

His appointment as director took place in 1844. Because of his hearing loss, he could not continue the office from 1851, but he continued his work for the university successfully. Under his vice chancellorship, the new construction of the main building on what was then Hopfenmarkt, today's Universitätsplatz, began, and the foundation stone was laid on March 13, 1867. On this outstanding event he was awarded the title of Excellence by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II .
