Carl Lazarus Henckel von Donnersmarck

Carl Lazarus Count Henckel von Donnersmarck (born March 5, 1772 in Neudeck , † July 12, 1864 in Breslau ) was a German freelance gentleman and industrialist.

origin

His parents were Count Erdmann Gustav Henckel von Donnersmarck (* March 18, 1734 - November 27, 1805) and his wife Freiin Rudolphine von Dyherrn and Schönau (* January 19, 1743 - May 30, 1802).

Life

As the younger son, he could not hope for his father's inheritance, so he bought the Kascherwitz estate in South Prussia . But his brother Gustav Adolf (born August 31, 1764, † November 10, 1813) fell near Schroppau and left no male heirs. So as the successor to his brother in 1813 he became a freelance landlord on Oberbeuthen and was the owner of the lords of Neudeck and Alt-Tarnowitz .

Karl Lazarus has expanded the family property considerably and was also the owner of industrial and mining companies, u. a. the ironworks in Lipine . His main income, however, came from agriculture and forestry. Mining was only carried out where this was possible without great effort. In the industrial sector, too, he was not very willing to take risks. After all, in 1828 he founded the Bethlenfalva hut with a puddling and rolling mill, and leased it, as well as his other two iron works. Despite his rather reluctant investment activity, his ironworks produced 82,000 quintals of pig iron , 7800 quintals of piston iron, 36,200 quintals of rod iron and 2,000 quintals of lintel and thin sheets in 1847 . In addition, in 1828 he had the largest production capacities in the Silesian zinc production . These three huts were also leased. Count Karl Lazarus only ran the coal mining industry on his own, without pursuing a noteworthy modernization strategy.

He was a colonel in the 23rd Landwehr Regiment. He also held the honorary title of Prussian Chamberlain and, from 1840, that of Oberlandmundschenkes in Prussian Silesia. He was a knight of the order Pour le Mérite and the Order of St. John. He was a hereditary member of the Prussian manor house .

Karl Lazarus had Neudeck Castle redesigned and expanded in the Tudor style.

In 1848 he handed over the property to his son Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck , who expanded the business on a large scale.
