Carl Ludwig Philipp Zeyher

Carl Ludwig Philipp Zeyher (born August 2, 1799 in Dillenburg , † December 30, 1858 in Cape Town ) was a German gardener and plant collector . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Zeyh. "

Life

Zeyher traveled to South Africa from 1825 to 1828, later again from 1829 to 1838 together with Christian Friedrich Ecklon , and collected plants there. From July 1840 to July 1842 Zeyher traveled on behalf of the 13th Earl of Derby with Joseph Burke from Uitenhage to the north across the Orange to behind the Magaliesberg to the 24th parallel and back. Burke primarily collected live and preserved animals, while Zeyher took care of the plants.

Honors

The plant genus Zeyheria A. Spreng . from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) was named after him and his uncle Johann Michael Zeyher .

In 1847 Carl Ludwig Philipp Zeyher became a member of the Leopoldina .
