Christian Friedrich Ecklon
Christian Friedrich Ecklon , also Frederik , (born December 17, 1795 in Aabenraa , † October 9, 1868 in Cape Town ) was a pharmacist and botanist from North Schleswig . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Eckl. "
Live and act
Born the son of a butcher, he began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist and then studied in Kiel . In 1823 he traveled to the Cape Colony , South Africa, and worked there for four years, first as a pharmacy assistant, then as a pharmacist. Despite his rather meager financial circumstances and his poor health, he was able to gain a reputation in the professional world with his botanical work. In 1828 he returned to Europe with an important collection. With German and Danish support, he and Carl Ludwig Philipp Zeyher traveled a second time to the southern tip of Africa in 1829 to continue his research and collecting activities. After his return in 1833, he worked on his research results in Hamburg until 1838. Part of his collection went to Copenhagen and another part to the Herbarium Kiel, the botanical collection of the university , which awarded him an honorary doctorate . His collections and works created the basis on which his friend Otto Wilhelm Sonder and the Irish botanist William Henry Harvey created the Flora Capensis in the years 1860–1865 . In 1838 he traveled a third time to South Africa and stayed there with a short break in 1844 until the end of his life. The genus of freesia is one of his discoveries, which are known to a wider audience .
Honor taxon
The genera Ecklonia Hornem were named in his honor . and Eckloniopsis Okamura named the algae. The Bornholm marguerite Osteospermum ecklonis from the Asteraceae family, which is widely used as an ornamental plant, bears his name as an epithet .
