Joseph Burke (born June 12, 1812 in Bristol , England ; died January 23, 1873 in Harrisonville , Missouri , United States ) was a British- American explorer and collector of animals and plants.

Life

Joseph Burke was the gardener of the 13th Earl of Derby at Knowsley Hall . The Earl of Stanley devoted himself to the arts and sciences in addition to politics, architecture and administration of his property. Knowsley Hall housed an extensive natural science collection, including numerous living exotic animals and plants.

Burke embarked on the brig Joanna for South Africa in December 1839 with the task of collecting plants and animals for the Earl of Derby . He reached Table Bay near Cape Town on March 16, 1840 and spent the next six weeks preparing for an expedition under his leadership that had been planned with the German gardener and plant collector Carl Ludwig Philipp Zeyher . On May 21, Burke left the Cape towards Uitenhage , where he met Zeyher on July 14, 1840.

After further extensive preparations, they undertook an extensive collecting trip through southern Africa from November 1840 to July 1842, during which they crossed the Orange River and advanced northwards beyond the Magaliesberg at the 24th parallel. During the trip, Burke was primarily occupied with collecting animals, while Zeyher was primarily responsible for collecting plants. They overcame great difficulties with their ox wagons and collected large quantities of plants and living and dead animals. In June 1842 they were back at the Cape and Burke traveled back to England the following month with a rich harvest of animals and plants. There, in particular, the botanical collection results were received with great recognition by experts.

The trip to South Africa was followed in 1843 by a collecting trip on behalf of the Earl of Derby and the prominent botanist William Jackson Hooker to North America, namely to the Northwest and California. The trip lasted three years, and Burke returned again with numerous plants, many of which were new to research.

In 1848 Burke emigrated to the United States. In California he worked as a prospector for a while, later he settled as a farmer in Harrisonville , Missouri .
