Carl Ludwig Freiherr von Bönninghausen Budberg gen. ( Russian Карл Васильевич Будберг ; born June 17 . Jul / 28. June  1775 greg. In Widdrisch , Livonia ; † August 19 jul. / 31 August  1829 greg. In lüle-Burgas ) was a Russian major general .

Life

Origin and family

Carl Ludwig was a member of the Livonian barons of Budberg . His parents were the Russian brigadier and heir to Inzeem and Widdrisch Ludwig Otto von Budberg (1729–1797) and Elisabeth Sophie, nee. von Löwenstern (1748–1811). In 1801 he married Karoline Charlotte Jakobine Berens von Rautenfeld (1779–1839), a daughter of the Russian Lieutenant General Johann Georg Berens von Rautenfeld (1741–1805). The marriage resulted in two daughters.

Career

Budberg began his career in the Imperial Russian Army with the Guard . In 1795 he was a captain in a dragoon regiment and adjutant to General Lacy . In 1799 he was promoted to brigade major and in 1801 to lieutenant colonel . Budberg took part in all battles of the Fourth Coalition War and in 1807 received the Order of Vladimir IV. Class. After being promoted to colonel in 1808, he first became commander and then chief of the Podolsk cuirassier regiment in 1811 , with which he distinguished himself during Napoleon's Russian campaign , after which the regiment was elevated to the rank of body regiment. At Borodino he was wounded and received the Georgs-Order IV class. His promotion to major general took place in 1813. In 1815 he became brigade commander of the 1st Cuirassier Division and in 1824 commander of the 2nd Hussar Division. During the Turkish War in 1829 Budberg was the commander of the Russian vanguard in Bulgaria and died of the plague during the campaign .
