Carl Maria Paul

Carl Maria Paul (born July 17, 1838 in Vienna ; † February 12, 1900 there ) was an Austrian geologist and paleontologist .

Paul studied geology at the University of Vienna with Eduard Suess and then initially worked as an intern at the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna, where he became chief geologist in 1883. From 1873 to 1893 he was the editor of the negotiations of the Imperial Geological Institute.

He undertook stratigraphic studies on the flysch -Sandstein in the Carpathians and eastern Alps and mapped in the Bukovina and Galicia , where he especially the chalk - stratigraphy examined and oil and salt deposits and worked as a consultant for oil production.

In 1885 he became a member of the Leopoldina . In 1885 he was awarded the Franz Joseph Order .
