Carl Randall
Carl Norman Randall Jr. (born March 29, 1949 in Los Angeles - † December 3, 2012 ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone , flute ).
Randall began playing alto and tenor saxophone at Mt. Vernon Jr. High School ; In 1967 he graduated from Los Angeles High School . He studied at Los Angeles City College in the jazz program, did military service in the US Navy, where he attended the US Navy School of Music in 1969 and was then stationed in Long Beach as a military musician. During his military service he was active in the Gerald Wilson Orchestra from 1971 , also with Donald Byrd and Willie Bobo . After his release, he worked with Johnny Hammond Smith ( Gambler's Life ). At the Palo Alto Jazz Festival in 1972 he appeared with Freddie Hubbard , whose band he was a member of for three years from 1974; so he worked on his in Japan released albums Liquid Love and Gleam in 1975. Then he toured with Bill Withers , and was again active in the Wilsons Orchestra from 1978 ( Theme for Monterey , 1998). He also worked with Blue Mitchell , Bobby Bryant , Frank Rosolino , Luis Gasca, Barbara Morrison , Jimmy Scott and in various big bands , such as Frank Capp's , the Clayton - Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and the Buddy Collette Big Band.
In the 2000s he was still working with Al Aarons and Phil Ranelin ; In 2006 he performed with Wilson's band at the concert at Yoshi’s for Kenny Burrell's 75th birthday ( 75th Birthday Bash Live! ). Randall, who participated in 13 recording sessions in the field of jazz between 1974 and 2009, died in early December 2012.
