Carl Rotky (born April 21, 1891 (according to the gravestone: 1889) in Graz , † August 16, 1977 in Grottenhof , then Kaindorf an der Sulm municipality, today Leibnitz municipality ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

Life

Carl Rotky was born in Graz on April 21, 1891. His father was the kuk district captain of Königinhof ad Elbe (today in the Czech Republic : Dvůr Králové nad Labem ) in Bohemia , while his maternal relatives came from the area of ​​Witschein (now Slovenian: Svečina) in Lower Styria . Carl Rotky's father bought a small farm on the Kogelberg near Leibnitz . The family settled in Graz in 1893. The two brothers Carl and Harry Rotky grew up in Graz. The family lived on the Kogelberg from spring to autumn. Even in middle school, Carl Rotky had the desire to become a painter. However, influenced by his father, who did not approve of this, he initially turned to studying medicine after having passed the Matura . He initially studied at the University of Graz and finished his studies in 1914 with a doctorate in medicine from the Charles University in Prague . After the First World War , which took him to Russia, Galicia and Poland, he returned to Graz as a military surgeon with several awards.

Now the well-respected doctor was urged to pursue his artistic ambitions. He began in Graz at the painting school with the study of painting and graphics with Constantin Damianos and Anton Marussig , which he finished with (Sandor) Alexander von Kubinyi (* 1875 in Debrecen ; † 1949 in Munich) in Munich .

In 1929 he moved to his house on the Kogelberg. Study trips took him to Germany, France, Italy, Yugoslavia and Greece.

His creative power remained unbroken into old age and new pictures were constantly being created in his studio on the Kogelberg. Carl Rotky died on August 16, 1977 in Grottenhof near Leibnitz.

Carl Rotky turned with great love the wood and linocut to.
