Carl Schuster (politician)

Carl Friedrich Schuster (born April 19, 1823 in Sinsheim ; † February 23, 1891 ) was Lord Mayor of Freiburg and a member of the German Reichstag .

Life

Carl Schuster initially worked in the Grand Ducal Baden State Service as a district tax officer for the tax administration. From 1866 to 1871 he was mayor and from 1871 to 1888 lord mayor of the city of Freiburg. He was also a member of the state parliament from 1869 to 1872 and since 1864 a member of the district assembly of the Freiburg district.

Under Schuster, the railway line to Breisach that was started under his predecessor was opened in 1871. In 1875 the new spring water pipeline, in 1884 the new gas factory and in 1887 the new municipal slaughterhouse were put into operation. The parade ground at Karlsplatz became the city garden.

In 1887, Schuster bought Bad Boll . He had the Badhof there modernized and set up a modern spa. To this end, he had the spa house and park expanded extensively and a chapel built next to the local bath spring. This is how Bad Boll developed into a well-known health resort in the middle of the Wutach Gorge .

From 1887 to 1890 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the National Liberal Party in the constituency of the Grand Duchy of Baden 5 ( Freiburg , Emmendingen ).

The Freiburg architect and painter Carl Schuster was his son.
