Eduard Fauler
Eduard Johann Anton Fauler (born July 26, 1819 in Thiergarten , Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen , † August 22, 1882 in Tübingen ) was a German ironworks and estate owner and politician.
Life
Fauler was the son of Philipp Anton Fauler , the manager and later co-tenant of a steel works in Thiergarten. Together with his brother Hermann, he was the owner of the steel works Ph. Ant. Fauler in Falkensteig , where he himself lived in Freiburg and ran an iron trade and the sale of his own products.
Fauler was mayor of Freiburg from 1859 to 1871 and a member of the leadership of the National Liberal Party in Baden . He was a man of action and less of words. Thus, despite economical housekeeping, Freiburg enjoyed a great boom under him. The city expanded to the south and northwest, with the population increasing from 17,000 to 25,000 between 1861 and 1871. The industry grew and expanded. Fauler drove the railway line between Freiburg and Breisach and prepared the construction of the Höllentalbahn. During his time the first bathing establishment was built on the Dreisam and later named after him. After over 100 years of existence, it had to give way to the construction of the Mitte feeder in 1972 . In 1983 today's indoor pool was built, which is no longer fed with Dreisam water. Under Fauler, the New Anatomy expanded and the Berthold High School was built.
Fauler stood up for the independence, autonomy and self-administration of the communities. In the dispute over a concordat agreement concluded in 1859, he advocated female teaching institutions and the threatened freedom of teaching of the university. Due to its expansion in the following years, more and more students were drawn to Freiburg.
From his basic attitude a bourgeois, Fauler always strived for balance and practical solutions, never denying his convictions. When he campaigned for the enlightened, liberal theology of Ignaz Heinrich von Wessenberg , he made many enemies on the ecclesiastical side.
Fauler's achievement as mayor was so recognized by the citizens of Freiburg that he was convincingly re-elected in 1871, although it was already clear that he would not accept the election for health reasons.
From 1860 to 1866 and from 1875 to 1881 Fauler was a member and 1879/80 2nd Vice-President of the Second Chamber of the Baden State Parliament , from 1868 to 1870 a member of the Customs Parliament and from 1871 to the beginning of 1872 a member of the Reichstag . During this time he was considered a staunch culture fighter among the National Liberals .
Immediately after the death of Eduard Fauler, the Grünstraße , which is now in the center of Freiburg, was renamed Faulerstraße . The indoor swimming pool named after Fauler is located on this. The Eduardshöhe between Horben and St. Ulrich in the Black Forest , which for a long time was the only connection across the Schauinsland between the Rhine and Wiesental valleys, is also named after him.
