Carl Theodor Gossen

Carl Theodor Gossen , also Charles Théodore Gossen , (born September 30, 1915 in Geneva ; † February 3, 1983 in Basel ) was a Swiss Romance scholar and linguist .

Life

Gossen received his doctorate in Zurich with The Picardy as a Linguistic Landscape of the Middle Ages (based on the documents) (Biel 1942). He completed his habilitation in 1952 in Basel with Walther von Wartburg with studies on syntactic and stylistic emphasis in modern Italian (Berlin 1954). Gossen was a professor in Frankfurt and was appointed to the University of Vienna as the successor to Toni Reinhard in 1959 (inaugural lecture: Problematic of the French language crisis, Vienna 1960). In 1967 he was appointed to Basel, again as the successor to Toni Reinhard, and was rector of the University of Basel in 1976/77. From 1979 he was head of the French Etymological Dictionary .
