Carl Wilhelm von Bessel

Carl Wilhelm von Bessel (born October 12, 1727 in Plantikow ; † December 12, 1800 in Prenzlau ) was a Prussian chamber clerk. From 1763 he headed the Chamber Deputation in Köslin and was President of the Pomeranian War and Domain Chamber from 1787 to 1795 .

The von Bessel family came from the Principality of Minden . His father Georg Eberhard von Bessel (* 1685, † 1755) was a retired councilor, from 1735 with the title of a Privy Council; In 1725 he had bought the Plantikow and Cramonsdorf estates in Western Pomerania for a period of 30 years. His mother was born von Hacke . His uncle Victor Carl Moritz von Bessel (1700–1786) became President of the War and Domain Chamber in Kleve.

Bessel studied law at the University of Halle from 1746 , but joined the Prussian army in 1747 . In the Battle of Kolin in 1757 he lost a leg in a cannon shot. After the end of the Seven Years' War , he retired from the army in 1763.

In 1763 Bessel was appointed director of the newly formed Chamber Deputation at Köslin . This Chamber Deputation, based in Köslin, was responsible for eastern Pomerania, the area of ​​the so-called Hinterkkreis. She was subordinate to the President of the Pomeranian War and Domain Chamber in Stettin . In 1775, Bessel tried to remove his Chamber Deputation from its subordination to the War and Domain Chamber in Stettin, but King Friedrich II refused. In 1786 the Chamber Deputation was dissolved and Bessel was transferred to the Chamber in Stettin as the first Chamber Director.

In Stettin, Bessel was appointed the new President of the Pomeranian War and Domain Chamber in 1787 after the death of Chamber President Hans Friedrich von Schöning . In 1795 he was retired with a pension at his request; Johann Friedrich von Schütz followed him in office . Bessel lived as a pensioner in Prenzlau , where he died in 1800.

Carl Wilhelm von Bessel had been married to Caroline von Winckelmann since 1768, a daughter of the later chamber director Christian Ludwig von Winckelmann . The marriage had eight children.
