Count Carl Wilhelm von Ludolf (* 1754 ; † 1803 ) was an Austrian diplomat and orientalist .

Life

Carl von Ludolf came from the Ludolf family of Erfurt , who were raised to imperial nobility in 1752 and to imperial count in 1778. His father Wilhelm von Ludolf (1717–1789) was a Sicilian diplomat at the Sublime Porte . Like many other members of the family, Ludolf was in the diplomatic service: from 1789 to 1795 as the Habsburg envoy to Sweden , from 1795 to 1801 in Denmark .

In February 1800, he published his own unfinished translation samples from the Schachnameh in the literary magazine " Neuer Teutscher Merkur " . Carl von Ludolf was a member of the Illuminati Order .

In 1789 he married Friederike Luise geb. von Closen-Heidenburg (1764–1820), widow of Johann Christian von Hofenfels , who died in 1787 .
