Carl Wirtz (* around 1640 in Cochem ; † December 10, 1705 in Neuwied - Heimbach-Weis ) was a German Premonstratensian and abbot of Rommersdorf Abbey .

Life

The Carl Wirtz family owned joint property rights with the Rommersdorf Abbey as neighboring vineyards in Cochem and Cond . A list of the Rommersdorfer wineries in Cond from 1600 to 1648 reveals a Johann Wirtz as a resident of a vineyard. In 1680 it is Maria Wirtz who is named as the owner of a Rommersdorf vineyard and in 1689 Carl Wirtz left an adjacent vineyard to his brother Adam for usufruct.

Wirtz made his profession in 1665 and was then prior of the monastery and at the same time pastor in Irlich, an electoral Trier enclave in the reformed principality of Wied . From 1664 to 1670 he was prior in Engelport Abbey and was elected abbot of Rommersdorf Abbey in 1671 to succeed Gerhard von Entzens .

During his tenure, extensive movements of goods were made through purchase or sale. From 1685 to 1688 he bought goods from the family of the mayor Schmitz from Leutesdorf , in 1692 he took over half of the Claurenschen goods in Oberhammerstein , which also included the castle house next to the church. In 1696 he bought the bridge interest from Irlich from the St. Ursula Hospital in Cologne . In 1700 the convent and Abbot Wirtz sold a farmstead at the Rommersdorfer Hof in Koblenz to the Archdiocese of Trier. In 1700 he acquired the Bassenheimer Hof in Leutesdorf, and the following year the Annischerhof near Klotten, which later went to the Counts of Eltz .

In Rommersdorf Abbey, he had the abbey church rebuilt from a basilica to a one- hip , two-aisled hall church and redesigned in Baroque style . In 1698 the north tower was demolished, later the nave, which had been shortened by two bays, was vaulted, the south aisle was raised and a roof was added. He also began demolishing and rebuilding the dilapidated monastery building south of the enclosure, but died above it on December 10, 1705. His nephew Johannes Wirtz was his successor .
