Carl Theodor Freiherr von Washington (born October 27, 1833 in Notzing , † 1897 ) was a Bavarian - Austrian relative of the first US President George Washington .

biography

He was the son of General Jacob of Washington and his second wife Caroline nee. Freiin Segesser von Brunegg. He became a colonel in the Bavarian army and chamberlain to King Ludwig II of Bavaria .

In 1862 he presented himself to the American Consul General William Murphy in Frankfurt am Main and expressed his interest in joining the United States Army in the Civil War . During this visit he showed the consul general his identification papers and family tree, copies of which are in the possession of the Historical Society of New York .

He did not go to war, on April 18, 1893, in Gries near Bozen , he married the Austrian Countess Marie Butler of Clounebouth , a descendant of a very old Irish family. The marriage remained childless.

After his death, his widow played an important role at court in Munich and Vienna . Due to her great wealth, she donated to charity and set up an orphanage in Vienna in memory of her deceased husband and a hospital in her home town of Haimhausen , both in the name of Washington.
