Carlo Egidi

Carlo Egidi (born May 20, 1918 in Rome , † February 2, 1989 in Milan ) was an Italian film architect .

Life

Egidi, one of the leading set designers in post-war Italian cinema, received his professional training at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome until 1940 . He then gained practical experience as an assistant to the film architect Guido Fiorini (e.g. in 1943 at Nessuno torna indietro ) in this profession. In 1946, Carlo Egidi helped build Vittorio de Sica's shoe shine , an early masterpiece of neo-realistic cinema, and rose to become chief architect the following year. In the following years he was entrusted with production design assignments for some of the central works of neorealist cinema, including the two Giuseppe De Santis productionsTragic Hunt and Bitter Rice , two films that also received a lot of international attention, and Achtung! Banditi! , a gripping resistance drama by Carlo Lizzani .

Egidi also later designed the structures for a number of films by well-known directors who were important for Italian cinema, including Pietro Germi , Mario Monicelli , Mauro Bolognini , Marco Ferreri , Francesco Rosi , Elio Petri and Alberto Lattuada . Egidi's film sets supplied some of the most important and high-quality cinema productions “with often socially committed and / or political statements”. His later drafts for films since the mid-1960s, on the other hand, were often little more than routine commissioned work, including comedies with Marcello Mastroianni , Sophia Loren , Stefania Sandrelli , Adriano Celentano and Dustin Hoffman .
