Carlo Francesco Thaon, marchese di Revel, conte di Sant'Andrea (also Charles-François Thaon de Revel , born February 28, 1725 in Nice , † December 14, 1807 in Cagliari ) was a general and viceroy of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont .

Life

Carlo Francesco Thaon di Revel di Sant'Andrea came from an old noble family from the county of Nice , which at that time still belonged to Sardinia-Piedmont. He graduated from the military academy in Turin and served first in the Saluzzo infantry regiment , then in the La Marina regiment (formerly Nice ), with whom he fought in the War of the Austrian Succession and whose commander he became in 1771. 1772 with the knightly order of St. Awarded Mauritius and Lazarus , he became a Brigadier in 1774 and Major General in 1780 . From 1781 to 1787 Thaon di Revel was military commander in the county of Nice, then he was viceroy in Sardinia as lieutenant general until 1790 and then governor of Tortona , Asti and Turin. Between 1792 and 1796 he led military units in the western Alps in the fight against French revolutionary troops , where he distinguished himself in June 1793 in the defense of the Authion massif. In 1796 he was promoted to General of the Infantry , four years later he received the Order of Announcements .

After the Napoleonic occupation of Piedmont , during which he was briefly captured by the French and freed from the same by the citizens of Susa , Thaon di Revel went to Sardinia , where King Charles Emanuel IV had also withdrawn. In 1806 promoted to Grand Master of Artillery and briefly appointed Viceroy of the island again, he died there in December 1807. His first-born son Giuseppe became general and first general commander of the Carabinieri , the second son Ignazio became an officer, diplomat, Latinist and writer. One of Ignazio's grandsons was the Italian Grand Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel .
