Carlo Grassi

Carlo Grassi , also De Grassis , (* 1520 in Bologna , † March 25, 1571 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church .

Life

Grassi came from a Bolognese senatorial family, his parents were Giannantonio Grassi and Diana Grati. He was a great-nephew of Achille Grassi, who was elevated to cardinal in 1511 . After studying at the University of Bologna, which he completed in 1557 with a doctorate utriusque iuris , he was ordained a subdeacon and in 1550 accepted into the cathedral chapter of Bologna. In 1554 he became His Holiness' s secret chamberlain .

On December 20, 1555, Carlo Grassi was appointed Bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto . During the Sedisvakanz 1559-1560 he was governor of Rome and was then appointed governor of Umbria and Perugia . He took part in the Council of Trent from November 11, 1562 until its end and was then a member of the commission that had to carry out the decisions of the council.

Pope Pius V appointed him cardinal priest in the consistory of May 17, 1570 , the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Sant'Agnese in Agone were awarded to him on June 9, 1570. He was entrusted with the task of winning the support of the Republic of Venice and the Kingdom of Spain against the Turks, and he should also carry out some reforms in the Roman Curia .

Carlo Grassi died on March 25, 1571 and was buried in the Roman church of Santa Trinità dei Monti .
