Carlo Kriete (born June 2, 1924 in Hamburg ; † December 24, 1989 there ) was a Hamburg painter , draftsman and graphic artist .

life and work

Kriete's artistic development began in 1940 with his own oil paintings. After military service he was accepted by Professor Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts in 1945 , where he attended the class of Willem Grimm and Professor Willi Titze (1890–1979). In 1948 he broke off his training. The expressionist artist Heinrich Steinhagen (1880–1948) then accepted Kriete as his only private student in his "Haus Steinhagen" on the Wiesenredder in Hamburg-Rahlstedt . Alongside Emil Nolde and Ernst Barlach , Steinhagen was a leading north German artist of the early 20th century. In Steinhagen's studio, Kriete a. a. also know the Hamburg composer Joachim Schweppe . After Steinhagen's death, Kriete took over the care of his teacher's estate. Thanks to his commitment, the Steinhagen plant was preserved even after the Steinhagenhaus was demolished in 1963.

Baggesenstieg 25, Poppenbüttel

Steinhagen's artistic expressiveness shaped Krietes abilities and helped him to create his own visual language. After various residences in Rahlstedt, he was able to move into his own studio at Baggesenstieg 25 in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel in 1970 , which he expanded over the years: the "Kriete", where concerts were also held. In 1963 he married the pianist Brigitte Ahringsmann - Justus Frantz was one of her students at the Hamburg University of Music .

Thematically, there were several focal points in Kriete's work. In addition to portraits of people, he painted northern German landscapes. In addition, he created works that deal with his war experiences and have religious themes as their content. His mostly representational style allows Kriete to appear as a pioneer and co-creator of the so-called “New German Painting”. But he differs from this style in the rejection of nudity and his own existential emotion.

Carlo Kriete’s life's work is said to include around 700 oil paintings and over 2000 graphic sheets. To date, however, there is no catalog of the artist's works. Works by Kriet are u. a. owned by the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Kupferstichkabinett) and in private collections in Germany and abroad.

The last years of Kriet's life were overshadowed by illness and alcoholism. He was buried in the Rahlstedt cemetery , his grave is in the immediate vicinity of his friend Joachim Schweppe .
