Carlo Vizzardelli

Carlo Vizzardelli (born July 21, 1791 in Monte San Giovanni Campano , † May 24, 1851 in Rome ) was an Italian theologian, university professor and cardinal .

Life

He began his training at the seminary of Veroli and studied at the La Sapienza University in Rome, where he received his doctorate theologiae as well as the Doctor iuris utriusque . He was ordained priest , the date of which is unknown, in his home diocese of Veroli . Later he was professor of canon law at the University of Bologna and at La Sapienza University. From 1829 he held a number of positions in the Curia and was the private treasurer of His Holiness and Canon of Santa Maria Maggiore . From January 30, 1843 to July 24, 1847 he was secretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs.

Pope Pius IX Carlo created Vizzardelli in the consistory of 17 January 1848 to Cardinal priests and awarded him on 20 January of that year, the red hat and San Pancrazio as a titular church . He became prefect of the Theological Academy of the Roman University and was the agent for the negotiations with the Grand Duke of Tuscany, which led to the signing of a concordat on March 3, 1848 . From April 10, 1848 until his death he was Prefect of the Study Congregation . As Pius IX. Fled to Gaeta, Cardinal Vizzardelli accompanied the Pope and remained at his side as an advisor.

Carlo Vizzardelli was buried in his titular church, San Pancrazio .
